Finnish Painters project
The Finnish Painters project promotes the international visibility and networking of Finnish painters and transparency of access to international activities. The project aims at a space where Finnish contemporary art and painting are internationally recognized and in demand.
Finnish Painters’ Union and the Finnish Painters project launched the finnishpainters.fi website while participating in the Supermarket Art Fair in Stockholm, Sweden in October 2021. The website works as an agent between art professionals and contemporary Finnish painters. The mission of the Finnish Painters team is to spread the word about Finnish contemporary art, and by doing so, to create dreams and possibilities of collaboration. The service is free of charge to all participants. The finnishpainters website highlights Finnish painters and the diversity of painting. It is the first English-language site to present Finnish painters extensively but in a curated way. The website was launched with 50 painters. The finnishpainters website added 36 new artists in the autumn 2022 and 21 artists in the spring 2024. The artists can be browsed by name, thematic themes, age, and location. The artists are presented with a short bio texts, CVs, and pictures of artworks and the artist. Website visitors can mark their favorite artists and works of art and by doing so, make their own collections. The painters presented on the finnishpainters website are curated members of the Finnish Painters’ Union.
In addition to artist presentations, the finnishpainters website publishes texts on Finnish painting and painters from both Finnish and foreign representatives of the art field. The first article published on the website is an essay by Leevi Haapala, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, where he discusses the factors that determine Finnish painters and painting.
As well as publishing and maintaining the Finnishpainters website, the project develops support services for members of the Finnish Painters’ Union and establishes contacts with both Finnish and foreign actors in the field of visual arts.
The Finnish Painters’ Union is a nationwide non-profit association of professional painters. The union works to improve the professional and social interests of visual artists and to promote the visual arts. One of the goals of the Finnish Painters’ Union is to increase the international recognition and demand for Finnish contemporary art and painting. Finnishpainters website is realized with the support of the Saastamoinen Foundation.
